Breaking: Hungary and the United States sign key nuclear energy pact

Szijjártó Péter has announced that Hungary will sign an important nuclear energy cooperation agreement with the United States, describing the deal as strategically significant for maintaining low household utility costs in the long term.

Speaking in Budapest on Monday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade said the two governments are preparing to conclude a “highly important” agreement on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. According to him, nuclear power remains a key tool for safeguarding Hungary’s long-running policy of cutting and stabilising household energy bills.

He stressed that atomic energy plays a central role in ensuring affordable utilities for families and protecting the country from volatile international energy prices.

Energy security and affordability

Szijjártó argued that nuclear energy is essential to preserving what the government calls Europe’s lowest household utility costs. By strengthening cooperation with the United States, Hungary aims to secure both its energy independence and long-term price stability.

The minister added that the agreement carries added political weight given what he described as a renewed “golden age” in Hungarian–American relations.

Stronger ties under Trump and Orbán

He recalled that bilateral relations had entered a new phase following the inauguration of Donald Trump, noting that Prime Minister Orbán Viktor reached several key agreements with the United States president during their summit in Washington late last year.

Thanks to those understandings, Szijjártó said, Hungary has been able to maintain its policy of reduced household energy bills.

“As a result, Hungarian people continue to pay the lowest utility prices in Europe,” he stated.

Ukraine peace talks also on the agenda

Beyond energy cooperation, the minister said the meeting would also focus extensively on efforts to bring peace to Ukraine.

He claimed that Hungary has been the only country in Europe to consistently support Trump’s peace initiatives from the outset of the war. According to Szijjártó, Hungary has neither supplied weapons nor severed diplomatic channels.

“We are the only ones who did not deliver weapons, the only ones who kept diplomatic channels open, and we are ready to host a peace summit,” he said.

The planned nuclear agreement, he suggested, reflects both countries’ intention to deepen strategic cooperation while addressing pressing security and economic challenges.
