Hungary’s FX loan crisis taken to the European stage

The Jobbik Movement for a Better Hungary, together with the European Christian Political Party (ECPP), held its conference entitled “Fair Solutions for Foreign Currency Loan Victims in Europe.” The aim of the event was to present the European context of the legal violations affecting Hungarian foreign currency debtors, as well as to uncover the shortcomings in the application of EU law that have hindered the enforcement of the rights of Hungarian victims for years.

At the conference, participants reviewed the EU dimensions of foreign currency loan litigation, the relevant judgments of the Court of Justice of the European Union, and the systemic failures that have led to the lack of implementation of these rulings in several Member States – including Hungary. The expert speakers highlighted that the situation of Hungarian foreign currency debtors is outstanding even in international comparison, pointing to rule-of-law and consumer protection issues within the EU that merit investigation at the European level.
