Iconic Budapest club closes: no help from authorities

A famous jazz club closes in Újlipótváros, in District 13 of Budapest. Even though they asked for help several times from the competent auhorities, they did not intervene.

Their rent had increased by more than 44 percent since 2012 and they were unable to continue paying. Thus, the trustee closed the building that was home to the Budapest Jazz Club in District 13 by changing the locks and putting up padlocks, the club reported.

In the farewell post, they said that the payment of the rent “was not smooth from the beginning”. They repeatedly “sounded the alarm bell” to the Municipality of Budapest, but they did not intervene and did not provide any help.

“We received the notice of termination on 21 June 2023, after which we tried to make a compromise, partial, self-funded settlement offer before the closure, but this was rejected by the trustee,” they added. They also wrote that they hope the departure is not permanent and that they are working on a solution, Pénzcentrum reported.

  1. Rent increased 44% in 11 years, why is that somehow a fault of the “authorities”? It is a very small increase considering the time and it is not the fault of the government of Budapest that the operators somehow could not manage this amount. I can only wish that my expenses over 11 years only increased by 44%.
