If Sweden wants to join the NATO, their prime minister will have to travel to Budapest – UPDATED

Hungary’s parliament could ratify Sweden’s NATO accession “early in the regular spring session”, but a meeting between the Hungarian and Swedish prime ministers in Budapest is necessary for that to happen, the group leader of ruling Fidesz said on Monday.

“If joining [NATO] is important for the Swedes, they will come here, just like they went to Türkiye,” Máté Kocsis said in a Facebook post.

Hungarian foreign minister discusses Sweden’s NATO accession with Estonian counterpart

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó discussed Sweden’s NATO accession with his Estonian counterpart Margus Tsahkna on Monday, reassuring him that the Hungarian government maintained its “positive approach” to the matter.

Speaking during a break in a cabinet meeting in Sopronbanfalva, in north-western Hungary, Szijjártó said he had spoken with Tsahkna by phone to discuss several key issues concerning both countries. He said he had reassured his counterpart that the Hungarian government’s positive approach to Sweden’s NATO bid was unchanged, and that the bill approving Sweden’s membership had long ago been submitted to parliament.

“I informed the minister that we have invited Sweden’s prime minister to Hungary, and I hope he will accept the invitation and come, because that will prove that this is indeed an important matter for Sweden,” Szijjártó said, according to a ministry statement.

Szijjártó said he and Tsahkna had also discussed the sanctions imposed on Russia, underlining that Hungary’s position was clear on this matter as well. “We believe the sanctions policy has failed, so we don’t see a reason to approve more sanctions packages,” he said.

He noted that the European Union plans to approve more sanctions against Russia on the occasion of the coming second anniversary of the outbreak of the war.

“I think it’s completely pointless to make this aspect of the EU’s functioning even more frivolous with the show of a sanctions package,” he said.

Szijjártó noted that the Hungarian government had made it clear at meetings in Brussels this past weekend that Hungary would not approve any kind of sanctions affecting the energy sector or the nuclear industry, or any that endangered the EU’s foreign relations.

Meanwhile, the minister said he and Tsahkna were in agreement that though there were issues on which their two countries disagreed, this was natural, and there were far more things that bound them together, and they had “far more shared strategic interests than we would think”.

He said they had agreed to boost bilateral ties, and that he had invited Tsahkna to Budapest. Tsahkna, he added, had “gladly accepted the invitation, and he will hopefully pay us a visit before the start of our EU presidency.”

  1. Slimy little toad demanding tribute…. while still trying to help russia….

Hungary slides ever lower in the estimation of those who love freedom and dignity.

  2. Hungarian government has every right to ask the Swedish president to explain their hostility towards the country and its people.

It is unacceptable for the US to pressure Hungary to approve Sweden’s NATO entry. It is time that the US start respecting individual countries’ sovereignty. To date, US foreign policy resulted in Ukraine/Russa war and the mess in the middle east. One day the Biden regime supports Israel, the next day they are pro palestine. Not one country can count on US friendship if they disagree with the democrat-controlled government.

  3. The reality is that the EU and NATO face a distinct threat that Russia may choose to invade the Baltics should Trump win election. Europe has one year to prepare until inauguration day and Fidesz is doing everything it can to undermine NATO. Trump has made real threats about pulling the US out of NATO and not stepping up to defend other NATO countries should they face attack. Putin recognizes that a Trump reelection represents his best chance at retaking the Baltics and there is a real possibility that he might not pass up this chance. He will make huge threats of nuclear annihilation should anyone get in his way and the Germans are already preparing for the possibility that Russia will elect to hit logistics targets deep inside Germany in the event of invasion. Meanwhile the Fidesz children are playing games with our security. Orban and his band are like a group of monkeys with a box of matches and a container of kerosene.

  4. Larry should do stand-up. It was under Trump, and ONLY under Trump, that Russia didn’t invade any of its neighbors. Besides, the military-industrial’s complex saber-rattling and wet dreams of a third world war do NOT actually need to happen, just because its toadies in the media are scaring us with it. As for Sweden, yes, Hungary has every right to demand an explanation for the Swedish regime’s endless vilification of our country.

  5. Michael Steiner you have pointed out one of the often used methods of faulty cause and effect logic that the Trump camp puts out. Just because something didn’t happen the cause must be Donald Trump. The Sun did not explode and extraterrestrials did not invade the Earth while he was president so Trump must be responsible. The fact is that we have a terrible war happening right now in Ukraine due to Russian aggression and Putin and his band have made numerous claims of wanting to take the Baltics back. They lied continuously saying that the idea of Russia invading Ukraine was “hysteria” and then they invaded. If Europe is weak it invites further Russian aggression and A-Hole Orban is doing everything he can to weaken Europe, He licks Putin’s A-Hole in his dreams.

  6. Larry, President Trump was a strong president, a president that believed in co-existence. President Trump was instrumental in reducing the danger from North Korea, helped to enact the Abraham Accord. Russia was busy with internal affairs.

The bad foreign policies of the EU, UK and US is helping with the killing of Ukrainians.

One day President Biden advocates Israel has the right to protect itself, a day after President Biden is asking Congress to approve money for humanitarian help for palestinians; palestinians that supported hamas.

If the US and EU cared about peaceful co-existence, these countries would work on establishing peace instead of supporting Ukraine’s pseudo war. There is absolutely no evidence that Russia wants to attack NATO, it is gossip spread by globalists.

Zelensky went to China to beg for help, China reinforce their support of Russia. This is a sign that if NATO takes the erroneous step to expand the war, China will probably enter into the war on the sign of Russia.

The leaders of the EU, UK and US should think hard before encouraging the expansion of the war because these nations could be big losers.

Not being supporter of either Ukraine or Russia, it is evident that all participants in this board game will be losers including US, UK and EU.
