A lorry driver bound for Italy with 18 illegal migrants concealed in the cargo hold was intercepted during a routine customs inspection by Hungary’s Tax and Customs Administration (NAV).

Migrants concealed behind OSB boards

Customs officers could scarcely believe their eyes — or their noses — when they uncovered 18 illegal migrants concealed in narrow, corridor-like compartments within the lorry’s load space, lined with OSB boards. Among them were 16 men and two women, all given a single barrel in which to relieve themselves for the duration of the journey.

It was this that ultimately exposed the operation during a routine NAV inspection on the M7 motorway. Officers examined the paperwork for the lorry en route to Italy and understandably opened the trailer. Official records claimed that the two drivers were transporting insulation material, yet the polystyrene sheets appeared suspiciously arranged, as though deliberately hiding something.

Initially, officers suspected a consignment of smuggled cigarettes, but upon opening the side door they were struck by a pungent, overpowering stench. A swift search confirmed that behind the polystyrene panels were makeshift corridors barricaded with OSB boards, inside which 18 illegal border crossers had been concealed as they endured a grim journey in the hope of continuing their lives in Italy. With only a single barrel for their basic needs, the stench detectable along the M7 motorway was intense.

The two alleged traffickers were taken into custody, and prosecutors have requested their pre-trial detention. The report by Blikk did not disclose their nationalities, nor is any information currently available regarding the nationalities of the migrants transported.

Numerous illegal immigrants in Italy

According to a November report by Mandiner, foreigners now constitute 9 per cent of Italy’s population — around 5.7 million people. This year alone, some 40,000 illegal immigrants have arrived, predominantly by sea, though many choose what they believe to be safer land routes, including transit through Hungary. An estimated 321,000 illegal immigrants are thought to be living in Italy.

Hungarian authorities have detained more than 12,000 illegal immigrants at the Hungarian–Serbian border this year. Police generally return apprehended migrants to the country from which they entered Hungary.

  1. Those who cheat at anything must be made examples of and punished. That goes for enablers as well. Co-conspiriters are equally guilty of fraud, deception, outright criminal acts or pretending to not be aware, miss treating others in society. Otherwise there is no incentive for general public to play fair, follow rules, get in line and wait their turn and show eligability for any service, job or entitlement.
Show leadership by protecting cultural norms from those who manipulate systems, lie thru acts of deception, show disregard for family values or local common religious practices…be it the always with hand out Sussex couple or behind the scenes but known criminals, it matters not…when behavior has negative wide ranging impact it has to be dealt with thru legal means and common sense responses.
