Budapest, September 8 (MTI) – Efforts to increase “Hungarians’ sense of security” represent a key issue, Istvan Simicsko, designated to replace Csaba Hende as defence minister, said in parliament on Tuesday.

Simicsko has been approved for the post by parliament’s defence and national secutiry committees.
Simicsko voiced support for efforts to stop “the wave of a new type of migration” and said that the military should assist the police in dealing with illegal immigration. He said, however, that soldiers should not be authorised to use weapons against immigrants, and added that “nobody promotes such an idea”. “Proportionality and restraint” are needed in handling the immigrant situation, as expressed in a relevant bill, he said.
Hende tendered his resignation from the post of defence minister on Monday, after which Prime Minister Viktor Orban designated Simicsko as his successor.
