The next captain at Anfield? Liverpool takes a bold step to extend Szoboszlai’s contract

Liverpool have signalled their intention to extend Dominik Szoboszlai’s contract even though the midfielder’s current deal runs until the summer of 2028. The club envisions a long-term leadership role for the Hungary captain, with formal talks expected to begin in the coming months and a target to reach an agreement within this season.

There is no doubt that the Hungarian player has been a great asset to Liverpool. Since 2023, Szoboszlai has played 101 competitive matches for Liverpool, scoring 16 goals and providing 16 assists – these figures confirm that he is one of the team’s most valuable and influential players.

Szoboszlai and his family are also happy

In March 2025, Szoboszlai married Borka Buzsik, a PR manager, in Budapest after a relationship that became public the previous year. They welcomed their first child, a daughter, in August 2025. His celebrations on the pitch often reflect the joy he finds in his family life. Szoboszlai and Borka are reportedly very happy living in Liverpool, where he plays for the Premier League club, and he actively shares moments of his personal life through social media.

Why talk extension now?

Top clubs increasingly lock in core talent well before the final two years of a contract. Barcelona tied Pedri down to 2030 well ahead of expiry; Real Madrid extended Federico Valverde to 2027 early; and Lamine Yamal is another prime example — despite being far from the end of his term, he received a new deal with a pay rise. The logic is the same each time: protect asset value, stabilise wage structures, and reduce squad-planning risk.
