Jason Momoa falls in love with Hungarian flavours in one of Budapest’s most popular restaurants

It seems even superheroes can’t resist Hungarian cuisine. Hollywood actor Jason Momoa, best known for his roles as Aquaman and Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, has recently been spotted dining in Budapest – and not at a posh fine-dining hotspot, but at one of Buda’s most beloved local restaurants.

As Street Kitchen writes, the star, who is currently in Hungary preparing for the next instalment of Dune, visited Gléda Vendéglő, a family-run restaurant known for its honest, homely yet elegant dishes. According to local reports, Jason Momoa dropped by the eatery on a friend’s recommendation, eager to sample authentic Hungarian flavours – and he was not disappointed.

His choice? A classic beef stew (marhapörkölt), followed by a rich chocolate cake known as Gléda Csokitorta. The actor reportedly enjoyed his meal so much that he promised to return before leaving Budapest.

A world known celebrity, but still humble

Restaurant owner János Deli – who previously worked in prestigious British establishments such as Heston Blumenthal’s The Hind’s Head and the Michelin-starred Cliveden House, serving the likes of Sting, David Beckham and Roger Moore – added that Momoa was as charming as he was down-to-earth. As Deli says,

In my experience, celebrities are often very conscious of how they come across. Jason was extremely friendly, open and approachable – and here, every guest is treated the same way, no exceptions.

Gléda, which will celebrate its seventh anniversary this autumn, has become a cornerstone of the Buda dining scene. The restaurant underwent a complete renovation two years ago and continues to thrive by keeping things simple: good food, honest flavours and warm hospitality.

Budapest has increasingly become a hotspot for international stars filming in the city – from Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet to Florence Pugh – many of whom can be seen enjoying local favourites in their downtime.

But unlike some of his Hollywood peers, Jason Momoa didn’t opt for a light salad or a trendy fusion dish. Instead, he went straight for the heart of Hungarian comfort food – a hearty pörkölt and a slice of chocolate cake.
