US VP JD Vance incoming: half of Budapest to be closed off, chaos expected en route to Budapest Airport

Change language:
JD Vance, the US Vice-President, is to arrive in place of Donald Trump to bolster Viktor Orbán’s campaign in its final push, spending Tuesday night in Budapest. His arrival and daytime movements will prompt the temporary closure of half the Hungarian capital, with central streets and squares particularly affected. The restrictions will also impact Budapest Airport, where public transport authority BKK urges all travellers to set off in good time to ensure they catch their flights.
JD Vance due in Budapest tomorrow
As we reported, Vance will touch down in Budapest on Tuesday, 7 April, in the morning for talks with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and to attend an afternoon event highlighting the closeness of US–Hungarian ties alongside the Hungarian leader.

The visit cannot be divorced from the Hungarian elections scheduled for 12 April, where—for the first time since 2010—polls show Orbán’s Fidesz party trailing Péter Magyar and his Tisza Party. Although Trump was once tipped to rally behind the Hungarian prime minister’s campaign, that now seems unlikely; some analysts suggest it is because even Trump no longer believes Orbán can win and is loath to back a lost cause.
Budapest traffic altered from early this morning
To accommodate the Vice-President and his wife, Usha Vance, half of Budapest will be temporarily sealed off, making journeys to Budapest Airport far trickier at certain times. Police say Vance’s convoy will arrive at the airport between 7am and noon on Tuesday, then proceed via the M4–M0–M3 motorway slip road–Kacsóh Pongrác Avenue overpass–Kós Károly Promenade–Hősök Square–Andrássy Avenue–József Attila Street–Széchenyi István Square–Lánchíd–Clark Ádám Square–Lánchíd Street–Ybl Miklós Square–Apród Street–Szarvas Square–Attila Avenue–Dózsa György Square–Palota Avenue–Dísz Square–Szent György Street route. Sections of this path will be closed in phases to match the delegation’s progress, while no-parking zones—roughly 50 metres deep—will be enforced on approach roads from 6am today.

From Buda Castle, Vance will head to Zugliget on Tuesday afternoon, with police again closing the route in phases; no-parking rules on side roads take effect from this morning. On Wednesday, 8 April, the stretch from Hegyalja Avenue to the Parliament building will face phased closures from 8am to 11am.
Budapest Airport access tricky at two key times
Vance will later depart from the US embassy on Szabadság Square for Budapest Airport, with police scheduling this between 2pm and 5pm on Tuesday—again closing much of the aforementioned route in phases.

Budapest Airport will thus face traffic curbs at two junctures: on the delegation’s Tuesday morning arrival, and during Wednesday afternoon departure. The airport operator has issued a dedicated Facebook post imploring passengers to factor in extra travel time on both days and to monitor BKK updates.
