Jobbik MEP Balczó: We need an independent European foreign policy
Addressing the plenary meeting of the European Parliament, Jobbik MEP Zoltán Balczó criticized the Middle East policy of the US. Then he expressed the need for an independent European foreign policy.
According to MEP Balczó, by relocating the US Embassy to Jerusalem and thus recognizing the city as the indivisible capital of the Jewish state,
Donald Trump created a crisis in the peace process, which had clearly been aiming for a two-state solution where East Jerusalem could become the capital of the prospective Palestinian state.
“Enjoying the support of the majority of EU Member States, High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini was correct to condemn the American decision.” Mr Balczó regretted to say that no unanimous position was achieved, however. The MEP also mentioned another US decision negatively affecting the peace process: ending the nuclear agreement with Iran.
Jobbik’s MEP stands by the EU’s continued support for the agreement because Euro-Atlantic cooperation cannot possibly mean that the EU accepts US dominance, he said. “We need an independent European foreign policy,” Mr Balczó asserted.
As it was reported earlier, Péter Szíjjártó’s Foreign Ministry was represented at the ceremony in Jerusalem, while the Minister had been quoted declaring that the EU did not need to show a unanimous stance in all foreign affairs issues.
