Irish Kneecap sends harsh message to PM Orbán after yesterday’s football fiasco

The Hungarian football team suffered a heartbreaking defeat against the Irish yesterday in Budapest, so we will miss out on the 2026 World Cup. Everybody here was sad while the Irish celebrated. Ryanair, the Ireland-based budget airline, mocked its Hungarian rival, Wizz Air, in a meme meant to be humorous. Meanwhile, Kneecap, the Irish rap band banned by the Hungarian government sent a harsh message to PM Orbán.

After the national team’s defeat, the captain, Liverpool’s midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, was left utterly speechless. Meanwhile, the head of the Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ), Sándor Csányi, struggled to hold back tears, and coach Marco Rossi described yesterday’s match as the lowest point of his entire career. The Irish celebrated triumphantly after securing their chance to qualify for the 2026 North American World Cup in the 96th minute—just seconds before the final whistle.

Both Wizz Air and PM Orbán mocked

The Irish low-cost airline, Ryanair, seized the opportunity to mock its Hungarian rival, Wizz Air. After Michael O’Leary previously hinted at dismantling the Hungarian-founded airline, he fired back with a meme following Hungary’s defeat, captioned, “You’ll never beat the Irish!”

The Irish rap group Kneecap, known for standing with Palestine and recently banned from the Sziget Festival and Hungary, didn’t hold back either. Following their ban, they closed a summer statement with an explicit message to Orbán Viktor, criticising the move as an effort to silence voices raising awareness about the suffering of the Palestinian people—especially as Orbán maintains close ties with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Yesterday, the outspoken comments aimed at the football-loving Prime Minister didn’t delay either. Just minutes after the final whistle, a sharp tweet went live saying, “Stick this where the sun don’t shine, Orbán Viktor!” Interestingly, Orbán himself shared three separate posts today reflecting on the team’s loss.

Always in trouble at the final whistle?

Earlier in Dublin, Hungary drew 2-2 with the Irish, conceding an equaliser at the very last moment. Whatever conclusions analysts draw from yesterday’s match, many believe something must be done about this recurring late-game issue.

    • These are not unknown guys as you say. Kneecap are very well known. There’s even a movie about them. They are credited with starting a cultural revolution in Ireland and renewing an interest in learning the Irish language. Maybe you should check your comments 🙂
