Lake Balaton’s tourism on the rise: Here’s the new star of the “Hungarian Sea”
In recent years, Lake Balaton has been enjoying its heyday again. Besides the large number of domestic visitors, many foreigners also visit the “Hungarian Sea” in the summer. Where does the charm of Lake Balaton originate?
Tourism developments in Keszthely
As Turizmus Online writes, Keszthely is one of the most popular destinations for lovers of Lake Balaton. However, this has not always been the situation. Keszthely’s tourism is on the rise and has a promising future. This uprise is powered by synchronised efforts in tourism and hotel expansions.
The surge in visitor numbers can be attributed to enhanced accessibility to the town. With almost 6,000 beds catering to tourists, the accommodation landscape consists of two-thirds privately owned and one-third commercial establishments. According to Keszthely’s mayor, Jenő Manninger, most visitors come from Germany, Poland, Czechia, Austria and Slovakia. He also said:
In 2023, more than 300,000 overnight stays were registered in the city, an increase of more than 40 percent compared to the previous year. Commercial overnight stays doubled, with almost twice as many overnight stays in the town in spring and autumn than in 2022. Tourist tax revenues increased by more than 70 percent last year. This is the most dynamic development at Lake Balaton.
What to do in Keszthely, in the heart of Lake Balaton?
The István Bujtor Film Festival is set to take place in Keszthely in 2024, featuring sports competitions, cultural events, talent showcases, and the Keszthely Cake competition to engage the public. Keszthely’s charm lies in its picturesque allées, and tree-lined streets steeped in Festetics heritage.
The City of Facades initiative has recently planted nearly 300 trees, aiming to create a connected experience through themed cultural and tourist activities, guided walks, and cycling tours along these streets. Surrounding attractions include the MATE Georgikon Equestrian Centre, Júlia Szendrey Memorial House, and the splendidly restored Festetics Manor, offering visitors unique experiences.
