Capital turning point: M2 Metro plans set to transform Budapest

Change language:

A new era could be coming for transport in Budapest. Long-discussed developments are back on the agenda, and work on the detailed planning phase is now set to begin. The future of the M2 Metro could take a direction that reshapes daily life not only for residents of the capital, but also for those living in the surrounding commuter belt.

A Long-Awaited Connection Could Become Reality

One of the most important elements of the newly signed planning contract is the creation of a direct connection between the M2 Metro and the HÉV suburban railway lines serving the eastern agglomeration. This would allow passengers to reach Budapest’s outer districts and neighbouring towns more quickly, more comfortably and with fewer changes. We have also reported on earlier issues with the railway lines, here.

The development could be especially significant for daily commuters. The current system is often slow and inconvenient, so a modern and integrated network could substantially reduce journey times.

Not Just Longer, But More Modern Too

The project is about far more than simply extending the M2 Metro. Plans also include the full modernisation of the connected HÉV lines, covering tracks, stations and technical systems.

In addition, several grade-separated junctions could be built, making travel safer and faster. New park-and-ride facilities, utility upgrades and supporting infrastructure are also part of the scheme, meaning a large-scale transformation may be on the way.

Nine Stations Could Also Get a New Look

Significant reconstruction works are expected at several points along the existing metro line. Nine stations and stops are included in the programme for full refurbishment, including step-free access improvements.

This is particularly important because a modern public transport system should be easy for everyone to use. The M2 Metro upgrade could therefore bring not only faster journeys, but also a more comfortable and modern environment for passengers. Lifts, improved public spaces and upgraded passenger information systems may all arrive at the renewed stations.

The Hungaroring Could Benefit Too

The development plans also include preparations for a new stop near the Hungaroring. This could be a major change for visitors travelling to the race circuit, where major events currently cause serious road congestion.

If the venue becomes easier to reach by rail, it would not only benefit spectators but could also reduce traffic pressure in the wider area. The indirect impact of the M2 Metro project could therefore extend well beyond the boundaries of the capital.

When Could Construction Begin?

According to the official announcement, the planning phase is starting now and may take several years. If everything stays on schedule, the construction tender could be launched in 2029, with works beginning in late 2029 or early 2030.

That may still seem a long way off, but for a transport development of this scale, careful preparation is essential. What is certain is that if the project goes ahead, the M2 Metro could become one of Budapest’s biggest success stories of the next decade.
