March 15 – Jobbik calls for “freedom, independence, respect” for Hungary
Budapest, March 15 (MTI) – The radical nationalist Jobbik party called for “a free, independent and respected Hungary” to be created, at celebrations of the March 15 national holiday held in central Budapest on Sunday.
Istvan Szavay, the deputy leader of the party, criticised the politics of the past 25 years and said this was not what youth in 1848 were fighting for. He said the transition of 1989/1990 falsely portrayed as a democratic transition had derailed and the country is still unable to cope with its “red (communist) past”.
At a press conference before the celebrations held on March 15 square, Szavay said Jobbik fostered “genuine friendship” with its Polish sister party, the National Movement (RN).
This is not a “political trick” like the friendship between Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party and the Polish Law and Justice (PiS) party, he said. RN is a nationalist organisation fostering Christian values that gives priority to national interests and fights for similar goals in Poland as Jobbik in Hungary, he added.
RN leader Robert Winicki said they had arrived in Budapest with a 100-plus-member delegation to reaffirm Polish-Hungarian friendship.
He said their visit was aimed to thwart efforts to drive a wedge between the interests of the two nations.
