What is the Difference Between MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5?
MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5) are considered the most popular and reliable platforms for trading in the global financial markets. They are the leading trading platforms in the industry. Their user-friendly interface, robust fundamental and technical analysis tools, and powerful risk management tools make trading flexible, transparent, secure, and fast.
But the two platforms have some differences in functionality. MetaTrader 5 was released five years after the launch of MT4, to offer traders access to new markets that MT4 did not provide. The two systems have their unique strengths and contrary to popular belief, MT5 is not an upgraded version of MT4.
Access to Financial Markets
With the MT5, traders can trade not only currencies but also stocks, futures, bonds, options, and commodities. Forex is a decentralized market, but stocks, indices, and commodities are traded on centralized exchanges. The MT5 server can connect to these exchanges.
The difference in Programming Languages
MetaTrader 4 is based on MQL4 and MetaTrader 5 is based on MQL5. Both languages can be used for the development of custom indicators and Expert Advisors. Trading programs developed in MQL4 are based on the order system, while MQL5 uses a positioning system.
Execution Mode and Order Types
MT4 supports three order execution modes and four types of pending orders. In contrast, MT5 allows you to use 4 order execution modes and 6 types of pending orders. Along with that, MT5 also allows you to execute orders partially. Thus, when trading volume is at a maximum and orders are pending execution, the MT5 allows traders to cancel the remaining volume.
Technical and Fundamental Analysis
MetaTrader 5 offers more tools for technical analysis than MT4. On the MT5 platform, you will find 38 built-in technical indicators and 44 analytical objects. On the MT5, you can open an unlimited number of charts on 21 timeframes.
Other features that are present in MT5 but absent in MT4 are the multithreaded strategy tester and the built-in chat feature of the MQL5 community.
