Major investment: The most expensive motorway in Hungary to be built soon

Change language:
A major new motorway in Hungary is on the horizon, and it’s set to be the country’s most ambitious road project yet. The M100, announced by Transport Minister János Lázár, will stretch over 32 kilometres and connect the Esztergom region to the M1, opening up a vital link to both Budapest and international routes.
New motorway in Hungary announced
As VG reports, Hungary is gearing up to build its most expensive and complex motorway, the M100. The announcement came from Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár during a public meeting in Szentendre this May.
Stretching over 32.3 kilometres, the new motorway in Hungary will link the Esztergom region to the M1 motorway, a major route connecting Hungary to the broader international transport network. With ten tunnels and several valley bridges planned, the project is expected to cost around HUF 500 billion (EUR 1.2 billion), reflecting its scale and technical difficulty.
Boosting regional connectivity
The M100 isn’t the only transport upgrade on the agenda. Minister Lázár also confirmed plans to renovate the Szentendre HÉV line and finally move forward with the long-delayed reconstruction of Road 11. These developments are part of a wider national strategy to improve mobility and ease congestion. The M100, however, is the centrepiece. Construction is expected to start in 2026, at the close of the current government’s term. Once complete, this motorway in Hungary will dramatically improve access to the M1 and better connect key regions to the capital.
