Attention: New bus seat reservation system to be introduced in Hungary
Starting 5 August, Hungary will see the introduction of a new optional seat reservation system on long-distance Volánbusz services. This replaces the previous supplementary ticket system and aims to enhance passenger comfort.
The seat reservation costs a uniform fee of HUF 300 (EUR 0.75), or HUF 285 (EUR 0.71) if purchased online. You can buy this reservation through the MÁV app—where bus tickets are now also available—or on the website jegy.mav.hu. Reservations are also available at ticket offices and MÁV-START machines, according to Volánbusz Plc.
Initially, this service will be available on long-distance buses departing from and arriving in Budapest, with plans to extend it to other cities in the future, Portfolio reports. Having a reserved seat will ensure you a guaranteed place, especially during peak travel times.
Fixed seat reservation fee
The seat reservation fee is fixed regardless of travel distance, passenger age, or ticket type (such as single tickets, passes, or free travel passes). Online reservations through the MÁV app or website offer a 5% discount, making them slightly cheaper at HUF 285 (EUR 0.71).
While purchasing a seat reservation is not mandatory, it is highly recommended for busy routes to secure a guaranteed seat. Passengers without a reservation can only occupy available seats on a first-come, first-served basis.
Reservations for buses departing on or after 5 August can be made via the latest MÁV app version, the jegy.mav.hu website (where you can select specific seats), Volánbusz and MÁV-START ticket offices, and MÁV-START machines.
Please note that the current online booking system, including its website, will be available only until 4 August.
