A simple payment solution used by one billion people is now being introduced in Hungary

By 2023, Weixin Pay (also known as WeChat Pay) had already gained over one billion active users. This mobile payment and digital wallet service, integrated into the popular Chinese WeChat app, has become incredibly successful and widely used across China. Now, it has made its way to Hungary, allowing payments at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport, duty-free stores, gift shops, and many other retailers. This development promises to make the stay of Chinese tourists in Hungary much more convenient.
Incredibly popular payment solution
Weixin Pay, or WeChat Pay, enjoys immense popularity among Chinese users. It’s no surprise that two years ago, user numbers had already surpassed one billion—and that figure has only grown since. This all-in-one mobile wallet allows users to transfer money, shop, pay bills, and complete QR code payments with ease. It supports swift transactions, payments within mini-programs, and app-based purchases.

Its widespread adoption surged during the pandemic, thanks to its touchless payment capabilities in stores. Another major factor behind its success is its seamless integration with the well-loved WeChat social platform: think of it as the equivalent of having Facebook Pay or TikTok Pay in the West. WeChat Pay is now available in 74 countries, supports over 30 currencies, and recently enabled direct linkage with international bank cards. Naturally, Chinese tourists show a strong preference for using this payment solution, and since their spending is relatively high, merchants are adapting accordingly: Hungary is no exception.

Where to use WeChat Pay in Hungary
Recently, WeChat Pay signed a partnership agreement with Visit Hungary, aiming to achieve two goals: first, to promote Hungary as a tourist destination among Chinese users; and second, to enhance the digital payment experience for local merchants and Chinese visitors alike. The aim is for as many businesses as possible across tourism, retail, hospitality, and entertainment sectors in Hungary to accept this payment solution. This would open up fresh opportunities to attract Chinese tourists, who are a highly valuable customer group due to their above-average spending habits.
Currently, WeChat Pay is accepted in key locations including:
- Budapest Airport, a primary entry point for Chinese tourists
- Duty-free shops
- Gift stores
- Numerous retailers across Hungary
From their arrival onwards, Chinese tourists can pay in their usual, familiar way. WeChat Pay supports both the euro and the Hungarian forint, ensuring smooth transactions in any Hungarian store.
