New rector heading Budapest top university

President of Hungary Tamás Sulyok appointed Hassan Charaf, professor and Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (VIK), as rector of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), effective 1 July. His term of office will start on 1 July 2024 and will run for five years.

Hassan Charaf is an electrical engineer and an economist, a doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Born in Lebanon, he studied at the BME, where he graduated in 1992. He joined the Department of Automation and Applied Informatics at VIK in 1996. Became Head of the Department in 2016 and later Dean of the Faculty in 2019, bme.hu wrote.

Since 1992, his scientific, research and teaching activities have been related to software development, and from 2004 to 2015 he worked as the Development Director of the BME Mobile Innovation Centre.

He has been involved in organising several international collaborations and joint training courses. Was one of the pioneers of introducing mobile programming in university courses and has initiated several international research and development projects related to mobile applications. He is also credited with the launch of a training programme for computer science operational engineers in collaboration with industry players.

Hassan Charaf participates in the board of several national and international organisations, including the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network Governing Board. He is also a member of the Board of the Artificial Intelligence Coalition and the Hungarian Association for Innovation.
