VIDEO: New, stylish hotel to be built near Hungarian international airport

Accord, a world-known hotel operator, is to expand its portfolio in Hungary to strengthen its regional presence. Therefore, they are going to open an Ibis Styles hotel at the international airport of Debrecen. The accommodation will welcome guests from 2025. Debrecen Airport is continuously expanding: they plan to serve 300,000 passengers this year.

As we wrote before, you can fly with Wizz Air to Tel Aviv, Larnaca in Cyprus (this route operates all year round), London and Eindhoven from Debrecen, and with Lufthansa to Munich. Furthermore, from 29 October, you may travel to Hurghada (Egypt), while from 13 December to Rome. In the summer, there were holiday flights to Antalya (Türkiye), Corfu (Greece), and Burgas (Bulgaria) from the airport. Moreover, there are plans to connect Istanbul, Türkiye’s biggest city, and Debrecen. We wrote about that in THIS article.

That is why there is a need for new accommodations in the Eastern Hungarian city where BMW is building a plant on 400 hectares of land, producing 150,000 cars a year. The German carmaker will create more than 1,000 jobs, and there will probably be people who will commute between the headquarters and the Hungarian division.

Accor recognised the market gap and will expand in Eastern Europe by building a new hotel at Debrecen Airport to serve the increasing number of passengers. They cooperate with the Xanga Group in that project, dehir.hu, a local news outlet, wrote. The new Ibis Styles will be the first hotel near the second most popular Hungarian airport. Dilek Sezer, Accor’s Southeastern European director, said that Debrecen is an important leisure and cultural destination in Hungary. Furthermore, it is a key player in Hungary’s economy and has an attractive economic development potential.

Rooms, apartments and conference halls in the new hotel

The new hotel will be the second of the group’s in Debrecen. Before, they opened the Mercure Debrecen. Mr Sezer highlighted they regarded it as a unique responsibility to open Debrecen Airport’s first hotel. István Herdon, the CEO of Xanga Investment and Development Group, said their team had operated the airport, and they were determined to develop the infrastructure of the airport and the city.

In the last decade, they created 30 thousand sqm of cargo, logistics and office places. Mr Herdon underscored that Debrecen needed the new hotel because of its flourishing economy. Before, they helped many companies to root in Debrecen by developing and renting out industrial and logistics buildings.

The new, four-storey hotel will have 73 modern, cosy rooms and 20 apartments. There will be a restaurant, a bar and a café inside. Furthermore, business travellers will be able to use the conference rooms. Based on the plans, the new hotel will open its gates in the second half of 2025.

The three-star hotel will increase the airport’s service quality, László Papp, the city’s mayor, said in Munich after the contract was signed between the two companies. He added that an ibis Styles was opened at Budapest Airport, so Debrecen catches up with the “big brother”.

In 2021, the Financial Times put Debrecen in the world’s TOP 10 concerning FDI strategy. 18,500 new jobs have been created since 2015 and EUR 12 billion has been invested in the Eastern Hungarian city.
