Fidesz is in favour of the construction of the Paks 2 nuclear power plant by Russia
Fidesz MEP Tamás Deutsch has slammed Socialist Party MEP István Ujhelyi for “having lied” that Fidesz would vote against a European Parliament resolution on the war in Ukraine, when the party had backed the motion.
He said Ujhelyi had lied about Fidesz having voted in favour of scrapping the upgrade of Hungary’ Paks nuclear plant, when the party’s MEPs had actually opposed it.
Deutsch said
Fidesz had opposed all parts of the resolution that would threaten Hungary’s energy supply.
As we wrote yesterday, work on the upgrade of Hungary’s Paks nuclear power plant is “proceeding according to plan”, the local unit of Russia’s Rosatom, the general contractor for the project, details HERE.
Ujhelyi told a press conference earlier that Fidesz’s MEPs had voted in favour of imposing sanctions on the International Investment Bank (IIB), Russian residency bond holders and ending cooperation with Russia’s Rosatom, the general contractor for the upgrade of Hungary’s Paks nuclear plant.
“Fidesz is in total chaos,” Ujhelyi said.
“After 12 years, all of [Prime Minister Viktor] Orban’s foreign and domestic policy endeavours have collapsed. It turns out that cozying up to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin leads to complete failure and is even a threat to Hungary’s national security.”
Ujhelyi said the EP would adopt a resolution on the war in Ukraine, adding that Fidesz’s MEPs had voted for the EU to expel the IIB, which he called “the spy bank that Orban brought to Hungary”.
Fidesz’s MEPs, he added, had also voted in favour of expelling those who were granted residency in the EU by purchasing residency bonds, “such as people in Putin’s inner circle”.
The ruling parties also supported ending all forms of cooperation with Russia’s Rosatom, “the partner of Orbán and his oligarchs in the Paks upgrade project”, Ujhelyi said.
