First Hungarian astronaut Farkas marked his second birthday with a public lecture
The legend of Hungarian cosmonautics, Farkas Bertalan, who is to date the first and only Hungarian astronaut, gave public lecture at the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Budapest on Monday. The event in the embassy took place exactly on the 39th anniversary of the Soyuz-36’s landing in Kazakhstan, 140 km southeast of the town of Jezkazgan.
The kick-off of the lecture was with a minute-precision of the landing that took place on June 3, 1980, following the 8-day flight in orbit.
In an informal and friendly atmosphere, Mr. Farkas spoke about his young years and how he ended up being a space-conqueror, despite his dream to become a football star. After the screening of the documentary, he addressed numerous questions from the audience, mostly students, and demonstrated souvenirs from his space journey that he has kept for many years – a glove, a packaged soup, piece of bread, etc. The lecture was in Russian – the language that Mr. Farkas speaks fluently. He is also know to be the first Esperantist in outer space.
As Mr. Farkas noted, every astronaut has two birthdays, the second being his/her safe landing on home planet. Congratulations, Mr. Farkas, on your second birthday!
