Romanian historian decorated with Hungarian order of merit, knight’s cross
President János Áder has decorated Romanian historian Lucian Boia with the Hungarian order of merit, knight’s cross in recognition of his work which has greatly contributed to improving Hungarian-Romanian relations.
The award was granted by head of the Hungarian embassy in Bucharest Botond Zekányi at an event on Tuesday evening.
Boia has repeatedly gone against the interpretation of history found in many Romanian textbooks and has been attacked by Romanian nationalists.
He told Hungarian public media at the awards ceremony that he was surprised but also pleased with receiving a Hungarian state award.
