This August, Budapest’s transportation history comes alive once again as the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) rolls out nostalgia vehicles, bringing back the charm and feel of days gone by. Anyone nostalgic for a ride on a tram with wooden benches or a bus running along vintage routes will find plenty of opportunities to indulge this summer.

Nostalgia rides every weekend

BKK is treating fans of vintage vibes to nostalgic transport options all August long. One of the rarest offerings is the N4 retro bus, which operates every Saturday and Sunday throughout the month, except for the last weekend. The route begins at Erzsébet királyné útja, travels down the iconic Andrássy Avenue, and arrives at the Zugliget Chairlift. With only a few stops along the way, passengers can quickly get from City Park to the János Hill cable car.

Nostalgia trams are also making a comeback on the tracks. The N2 tram runs on Saturdays along the Pest side of the Danube riverbank, while the N19 tram offers Sunday rides on the Buda embankment, promising picturesque World Heritage views from aboard the vintage streetcars.

Special routes throughout the month

Throughout August, BKK will operate several unique retro services:

  • 9 August: The N109 cabrio bus will take riders past Budapest’s iconic landmarks, including the Danube Promenade and the Parliament.
  • 10 August (Sunday): The N19i loop service will run through Csóka Street, Szent Gellért Square, Buda’s famous thermal baths, Déli Railway Station, and Széll Kálmán Square.
  • 11 and 18 August (Mondays): The over 150-year-old N60 cogwheel train will return, operating between Városmajor and Széchenyi Hill.
  • 17 August: Due to construction, the N19 tram will follow a modified route between Batthyány Square and Kelenföld Railway Station.
  • 20 August: In honour of Hungary’s national holiday, a special holiday tram—the N42-50—will run along a route no longer serviced by regular public transport.
  • Also debuting is the R75-83 retro trolleybus, connecting two distant points in downtown Budapest and offering a one-of-a-kind detour through Kőbánya Garage.

Tickets, prices, and experiences

According to the BKK announcement, passengers can access the retro rides at standard fare rates—no special nostalgia ticket required. Tickets can be purchased through the following options:

  • Via the BudapestGO app,
  • At BKK customer service centres and ticket offices,
  • Or directly from onboard staff, where credit card payment is available.
