Good news: Number of foreign visitors up in Hungary

The number of guests at commercial and private tourism accommodations in Hungary rose 1.9pc to 2,459,000 in July from the same period a year earlier, while the number of guest nights slipped 1.4pc to 6,679,000, data released by the Central Statistics Office (KSH) on Wednesday show.

The number of domestic guests rose 2.1pc to 1,338,000 and the number of foreign visitors climbed 11.2pc to 1,121,000. The number of guest nights spent by domestic travellers fell 2.7pc to 3,826,000, while guest nights spent by foreign visitors edged up 0.5pc to 2,853,000.

Revenue of commercial accommodations, which include hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, camp sites, resorts and hostels, rose 1.9pc to HUF 139.9bn. A total of 38,357 tourism accommodations hosted guests in July, including 35,312 private and other accommodations.

For the period January-July, the number of guests increased 6.4pc to 10,681,000 from the same period a year earlier. The number of domestic travellers was up 2.1pc at 5,379,000 and the number of foreign visitors rose 11.2pc to 5,302,000.

Commenting on the fresh data, Visit Hungary CEO Olivér Csendes said performances by international stars Guns N’ Roses, Lionel Richie and Jennifer Lopez had boosted the tourism sector in July. He added that August guest numbers were lifted by the Hungarian Grand Prix, the Sziget music festival and the August 20 national day celebrations.
