Orbán cabinet: Pro-peace and anti-migration shift on the EU stage would not be possible without a shift to the right

The coming local council and European Parliament elections will be crucial factors in Hungary’s fight to protect its sovereignty, the foreign minister said on Monday.

Addressing a podium discussion in Békés, in south-eastern Hungary, Péter Szijjártó said that Hungary had succeeded in protecting itself and its interests amid the various crises in recent years.

The minister noted Hungary’s swift vaccination campaign during the pandemic, the government’s investment promotion scheme and Hungary’s ability to stay out of the war in Ukraine “in spite of the immense pressure put on our country”.

He said Hungary had stood firm on “the only morally acceptable position” of calling for peace in the war.

Meanwhile, he noted that the government had succeeded in evacuating all Hungarian nationals following the outbreak of the war in Gaza, and in freeing all but one of the Hungarian hostages taken by Hamas.

Szijjártó said all of this had only been possible because of the country’s “exceptional political stability”.

He said that over the coming years Hungary would have to keep defending itself against “attacks” questioning or “seeking to eliminate” its national sovereignty.

“It’s clear that this liberal mainstream is trying to rule over us both at the European and global levels,” the minister said, adding that because Hungary had a “patriotic and sovereigntist government”, it could expect to keep having to fight to protect its national interests in the coming years.

Concerning the EP elections, Szijjártó said a pro-peace and anti-migration shift on the European political stage would not be possible without a rightward shift, saying it was crucial for the patriotic right-wing parties to have a successful showing at the June ballot.

Meanwhile, Szijjártó said the Visegrad Group cooperation was “at the heart of” Hungary’s foreign policy, and Hungary, Czechia, Poland and Slovakia were far more effective together when it came to crucial issues than they would be on their own.

  1. Interesting how our Politicians spin the COVID response as a great success for Hungary:

You would think we would have performed better? For a change, Hungary was the only European Union country that decided to opt out of the EU vaccine deals, preferring to source from Russia and China. Why join in tenders, leveraging the resources of a large organization when you can make things up on your own (wonder who did the sourcing, the eventual cost, etc…).

  2. This pro-peace posturing wouldn’t be necessary except for wars started by right-wing governments.

  3. Re: the complete Fidesz failure on Covid vaccines. Sputnik was never recognized by the WHO as meeting the standards of effectiveness. Hungarians could not travel to North America until they were revaccinated with a recognized vaccine – Pfizer, Moderna, etc. Fidesz also wasted millions of euros on non-functioning Chinese ventilators. Now my family tries to buy something as simple as a working thermometer. There is only one Chinese thermometer available in pharmacies and it doesn’t work. In case Hungarians are too stupid to figure it out for themselves I will state the reason why Fidesz keeps making deals with Russia and China. These are the two countries you can make deals with and be assured of making secret contracts that you can get large kickbacks from. Fidesz is flooding Hungary with Russian and Chinese crap in order to line the greedy pockets of the Fidesz elite. Excepting the few ones who understand what is going on Hungarians deserve what they get.

  4. If Fidesz can not “convince” with all their wisdom (as they say to have) to all the Remaining EU countries, why they just dont leave as UK Did? Is a serious question. All what i hear all the time is Hungary is pro peace and so on, but never give a serious plan to achieve it. Or maybe Or an wants to Ukraine to surrender whent all the countries stop support? Idk but Its just no sense what the PM and the FM are just talking all the time. It is just a so unnecessary war.

  5. Hungary has an UGLY history, remembering, that History never LIES, who it “Get’s” – into Bed with, relating to PARTNERSHIPS.
Through WRONGFUL choice, they have been quite cataclysmic disasters, that HAVE severely resulted in Hungary coming out Humiliated, Scared and Damaged.
Victor Mihaly, Orban, is a very POOR reader of Hungarian history.
Orbans lack of understanding, application of facts, arising out of factual events of history, that Hungary have SUFFERED humiliation, just continues to PLUNGE the name of Hungary, building relationships with Russia and China, abolishing Democracy in Hungary, and moving to a Dictatorship – will AGAIN, if permitted by the citizens of Hungary, end in being, in the strongest of probability, the “perilous” end to our country – Hungary.

  6. Just once I would like to read one word or one sentence that is complimentary to Hungary, Hungarian people or even the Orban Government. People of Hungary keep electing a FIDESZ government because they realized that the previous socialist government ruined average Hungarians’ life and the Hungarian economy.

I am trying to figure out what is your aim. Criticizing the past does not help, history cannot be changed. All your comments are pro EU and globalist. What have you against Hungary that you want this little country to be under foreign dictatorship.

Every country has to enact laws that suits the population. It seems FIDESZ has the ability to respond to the needs and desires of the people. Keeping uneducated criminal aliens out of the country, keep gender brainwashing out of schools and staying out of Ukraine/Russia war are policies that are broadly supported in the country. All government should respond to the wishes of its population, therefore in spite of some mistakes and setbacks the Hungarian government can be called a success.
