Orbán congratulates Sunak on becoming British PM
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Monday congratulated Rishi Sunak on becoming the new British prime minister.
In his message to Sunak, Orbán referred to “excellent” bilateral ties between Hungary and the United Kingdom, noting that cooperation was based on mutual respect, shared values and interests and deep-rooted historical relations.
In these difficult times characterised by numerous crises when the various challenges directly affect the two countries’ citizens, it is important that “as like-minded allies and partners, we continue to increase the intensity of our already close cooperation”, Orbán said.
The prime minister expressed his commitment to strengthening Hungarian-British relations and building strong and mutually beneficial cooperation between the UK and the European Union.

Orbán must have choked on having to congratulate a non-white Hindu becoming the Prime Minister of a Western Christian country that has a population of around 81% white and just 7% Asian. His overt racism will not go down well with Rishi Sunak, that’s for sure. The again, Hungary is such an unimportant country, I doubt whether Sunak will any sleep over what Orbán does or does not think.

Your opening line of VO “choking” did make me smile on this dreary Tuesday morning. Good luck to Rishi.
Sunak is inheriting a right old mess which he himself had correctly predicted in the Conservative Party leadership campaign. The Tory members preferred Truss’ fairy tales over Sunak’s facts (lesson to be learned?) … Brexit (perhaps another lesson?) already complicated matters for the UK and all of Europe, however a large economy on our doorstep in such turmoil can best be described as an imminent threat.
CUDOS for his achievement. His outright election is by his peers, based on merit. On Diwali no less, the festival of lights – one of the most important days of the Hindu calendar! Should there be (have been) an election? Perhaps. Democracy would be served. But for the short term – fingers crossed he manages to turn matters around!
