Orbán: it’s not our war, but our hearts, naturally, are with those under attack
A Fidesz win in Sunday’s general election will guarantee Hungary staying out of the war in Ukraine, while an opposition victory would mean being dragged into it, the prime minister said in a video on Facebook on Monday.
Viktor Orbán said that what was at stake in the election was higher in light of the war since right- and left-wing parties had reacted to the war “in different ways”.
“Our position is completely clear: this is a Ukraine-Russia war. This is not our war. This is a war between two peoples,” he said, adding that
“our hearts, naturally, are with those under attack.”
“No one can ask of us that we send our soldiers to a war which has nothing to do with us,” he said.
The same applied to sending weapons or allowing them to pass weapons through Hungary, Orbán said, adding that they would instantly become military targets in Hungary or in Transcarpathia (Kárpátalja), in western Ukraine.
The prime minister said that
if the nationally minded side won the election, “we’d have a chance of peace”.
With an opposition victory, however, there’d be a chance Hungary would be at war, Orbán added.

Can’t stop lying can he. No one is asking to send Hungarian soldiers to Ukraine. No NATO troops are being sent into Ukraine. It would give Putin the reason he needs to escalate it into WWIII and then where would we be. As the saying goes, ‘liars create the illusion of truth’………
Should have thought twice about all the election bribes too, the deficit being as it is. Still, his sycophantic behaviour to Putin means we’re ok for gas. Of course Putin has threatened to turn it off if he doesn’t get the payments in Rubles.
What a hypocrit.
@Ria we have agreed to buy Russian gas through to 2036 (for which Mr. Orban negotiated increased volumes in his February 2022 talks with Mr. Putin), at a rate five times cheaper than the market price in Europe, the question and issue is what we’re expected to do or give in return for these massive discounts … Other than cash …
Netflix Age of Tanks Episode 2 features 1956 … Makes for a CHILLING watch – especially with Mr. Orban’s “this is not our war” ringing in our ears… Doesn’t mean we need to send troops – however there are options, it’s a choice
