BREAKING – PM Orbán may meet Putin on Friday in Moscow

According to Szabolcs Panyi, a Hungarian journalist, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán could be flying to Moscow this weekend, coinciding with Russian President Vladimir Putin returning that very day from his three-day visit to Kyrgyzstan. The Government Information Centre neither confirmed nor denied the trip. Today, CBS, the American television broadcaster, reported that the Ukrainians have accepted the peace terms, although they added that a few “minor details” still need to be worked out, a point also confirmed by Donald Trump.
Ukraine peace deal on the horizon?
The American president believes significant progress has been made towards ending the war in Ukraine. The original 28-point American proposal has been substantially reduced and is under negotiation, yet Trump says only a few minor points require clarification. Meanwhile, reports suggest the acceptance may be in doubt because Putin insists on holding on to parts of Ukraine not under Russian occupation, which Kyiv understandably refuses to accept as peace conditions.

Nonetheless, Trump is sending his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, to Moscow to meet the Russian president. At the same time, the US Under Secretary of Defence, Dan Driscoll, is negotiating with the Ukrainians. The American president is highly determined to end the war; he claims to have concluded eight conflicts in his nine months in office and is not far from closing the one in Ukraine.
PM Orbán may travel to Moscow
Joining this effort could be Prime Minister Orbán, who last July embarked on a “peace tour” to Russia and China. However, the move failed to gain support from European allies, and even the White House greeted his explorations with coolness.

According to Szabolcs Panyi’s information—about which he plans to report more extensively in Thursday’s Vsquare English newsletter as per his Facebook post—Orbán will fly to the Russian capital on Friday to meet Putin. The Government Information Centre did not deny the trip but also did not confirm it. They responded that the public would be informed about the prime minister’s foreign travels as usual. Panyi wrote that his information comes from well-informed, reliable sources, though he has not shared more details yet.
Both Trump and Putin support Orbán
The idea that the parties might arrive in Budapest within weeks to continue talks first surfaced during Trump and Putin’s Alaska meeting. However, at that time, Putin presented unacceptable demands (mainly territorial concessions), forcing the American president to pull the brakes. Since then, both the Hungarian government and President Trump have indicated they are ready to end the conflict in Budapest.

Orbán faces an unprecedented test in April 2026 with the parliamentary elections, as for the first time since the summer-autumn of 2006, Fidesz is not the favourite. Péter Magyar’s party leads significantly everywhere except in government-aligned institutes’ polls. Interestingly, both Trump and Putin expressed support towards Orbán for the upcoming election.

Orban has zero to do with any peace deal. Putin (and to some extent Trump) wants to do anything he can to help Orban win re-election because Orban does all of Putin’s dirty work for him inside the EU and NATO. Putin thus creates a PR stunt for Orban to use to show how the world can’t exist without him.
Yes, Dear Larry – President Putin is doing what he can do to bolster Orban Viktor, as is President Trump.
I wonder what XI is doing, or Fico, Vucic, and others?
I think a lot of EU countries do not wish to see Orban go, if for no other reason than his presence always shields them from having to play the difficult role of Bruxelles Dissenter.
China has put billi0ns into Serbia and Hungary, in recent years.
Though I have seen no reports on this, they must be doing something to support Orban and Vucic against the ongoing regime-change operations being conducted by the Western Elite against these two men.
China is investing heavily in Hungary because it offers access, political support, and a logistics springboard into Europe (tariff barriers, anyone?).
And there is a reason for our Politicians to keep confidential the Budapest–Belgrade Railway “arrangements”, the Fudan University Budapest Campus and Huawei / 5G infrastructure. No dependency, reliance or other typical Hungarian aspects (Politician friends and toadies?) to see here, folks!
A potential wedge, if you will. The Chinese are not known for their altruism – theirs is more of a long game thing, with current perceived “generosity” allowing for – well lets call it “opportunities” or “leverage” later.
Yes, Dear Norbert, it does seem as if China’s EU strategy revolves around a very close relationship with 2 neighbours – Hungary and Serbia.
Yes, of course- China is not doing this for altruism, because there is no government that makes huge investments for altruism.
One thing I will note – China is not the only one with a long game, here, but, as well, Orban Viktor also has a long game strategy for Hungary’s survival – and it involves being friends with many – starting with China, Russia, and, so long as Trump and Vance are king, the United States.
Of course, Orban’s policies have many other important friends – not least of which is Azerbaijan, and the new ‘Hungarian oil fields’.
Hungarians ought be keen to observe that what they think he lacks he has in his domestic policy, he has a brilliant strategy to defend Hungary’s limited sovereignty.
Unlike any Hungarian government in a long time, Orban has correctly assessed Hungary’s external problems and has adopted an effective policy to counter them.
There is no one else who could do this.
@Larry in my humble opinion you are getting a little frustrated because there has finally been a breakthrough in this war that could have easily been avoided! You don’t like the fact that Orbán, the Hungarian Prime Minister you reviled and despised, has tried to contribute to this! The Brussels shrew who was allowed to wait in the White House hallway in Washington because she was considered irrelevant by the Trump administration has been exposed! When the guns finally fall silent, Merz, Stärker, and Macron will be able to whip other cats in their respective home countries! Merz has swallowed almost all his electoral promises! Starmer is a farce and feels Nigel Farage’s hot breath on his neck, partly because of the migration debacle! Macron’s popularity is still 10%, which is even worse than that of socialist Hollande when he was president! Cruella Von der Leyen will soon face a second vote of no confidence in the EP, tabled by both the left and right groups! The motion points of left and right differ, but they agree on one point! This is that this upstart and unelected baroness does not use any transparency and turns the EU into an authoritarian little house led by bureaucrats who will, so to speak, decide what color your socks should be! The previous Commission President, the Luxembourg Junckers, was a drunken slob, but Von der Leyen, together with Kallas, is poison for the EU! Another piece of good advice, Larry! Resentment is a very poor teacher and negatively influences an objective, but above all, well-founded opinion!
Oh – The Special Military Operation – which was supposed to last months, not longer than WW1 – could have been “easily avoided”? I am so curious – please tell us what all the biased Western media has been keeping from us? Eradicate “all the Nazis” in Ukraine? Anoint a puppet regime? Relinquish recognized Ukrainian sovereign territory?
Never mind Russias approach to the international law, agreements and treaties, whether the UN Charter Article 2(4), the Declaration on Principles of International Law (1970), the Helsinki Final Act (1975) or the he Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances.
There is a reason why Finland and Sweden were so keen to join NATO all of a sudden. Russia uses treaties and international law as tools. Obligatory when useful, negotiable or even disposable as and when the need arises. Nothing about the Russia–Ukraine conflict is easy or simple, but this is just my opinion – and happy negotiating with a party of this mindset – #trustiskey
None of anything you mention would have happened if NATO had kept their promise, with the reunification of Germany, to not go East.
But, okay, forget that – even if The West had kept their promises with Minsk I & II, there would be no ‘special military operation.’
Why call it a special military operation?’
To let NATO know that the Ukraine will not be NATO – Russian, and that
Russia has no interest in a war of conquest with countries that hold nothing worth to conquer.
As to Sweden and Finland : I cannot imagine why they could be worried about their sovereignty when they have imported invaders who, in a matter of 2-3 generations, will outbreed them.
There was, to the best of my knowledge, never an agreement that “NATO would not go east”. But feel free to correct me.
Minsk 1 and 2 – again, to the best of my knowledge, responsibility for their implementation rested squarely with Ukraine, Russia, and the separatist authorities. “The West” as you term us (are you sure you are in the US and not in Perm or something?) urged diplomatic solutions and periodically pressured Russia publicly adhere to Minsk 1 and 2. Very different from a formal obligation – or breach, for that matter. On this topic – any observations re Russias approach to the international law, agreements and treaties? I listed a few examples, so I am curious.
If I am not mistaken, reading Mr. Putins speeches, he continually references “historical Russian lands” – including but not limited to Ukraine. And “denazification”. Missing this in your retort.
The big issue for you (and Russian appears to be the concept of a sovereign Ukraine (conversely – sovereign Hungary – surprisingly big tick). “The West” was very wary of inclusion of Ukraine in NATO, so they were not even close to NATO Membership in 2014 or 2022, to name two dates. Yet still, Russia invaded Crimea and initiated a war on the rest of Ukraine. Speaking of which – where was the action – apart from rhetoric – when the Baltic states joined in 2004?
Little history lesson, maybe. After the fall of the USSR, for Central and Eastern European countries (including Hungary), joining NATO was a path to security, after all the lessons learned in the Warsaw Pact – not an act of aggression. I think what happened to Georgia, Crimea, Moldova, even Belarus has pretty much vindicated those who made these decisions.
You are not in Europe – I can assure you the fear of Russia is palpable. And Russian actions and posturing is definitely not helping.
Hungary, through “long term” planning and investment through the “invitation” of Victor Mihaly. Orban and his Fidesz Government movement radical – the distillation of DEMOCRACY – term it under “infrastructure” into Hungary, being a CHEAP investment for China – as included in “others” commentary’s in relation to the subject matter of this article, does it NOT present that Budapest, Hungary is an integral point of the – New Silk Road – the meeting of the East with the West ???
NEVER – should it be FORGOTTEN, as history never lies, that throughout history China can be EXHIBITED on numerous occasions of just “packing there bags”- walking or abandoning contractual negotiations and arrangements with “other” countrys – through principally, the “other side” in this case could be Orbans-Fidesz Government of Hungary who are DEBTOR’s to China – not being FULLY committed Gofer’s ????
Has not just centering on China – is it NOT understood that Victor Mihaly. Orban – his Fidesz Government been totally RESPONSIBLE – to the SELLING off of Hungary in a gargantuan PARCLE – Hungary ???
Regardless who loses or wins the Ukraine vs Russia war, Hungary will be the loser. Hungarian foreign policy is disgusting and shameful. The Hungarian people must make a change in government
‘Hungarian foreign policy is disgusting and shameful…’
If Orban’s foreign policy were that of the EU, 20 million+ Ukrainians would not be homeless, nearly 2,000,000 Ukrainian men would not be dead, and Blackrock would not suddenly own 50% of the Ukraine.
So, clearly what you think is ‘disgusting and shameful’ has to be a riddle for the ages, because it sure does not make sense…
Solution: as a sovereign nation, just … Capitulate?
Russia is the aggressor. Simply put – if Russia stops fighting, the war will end. But Mr. Putin does not want to stop, until his maximalist demands are met. Is he, now?
Speaking of casualty figures … Mr. Putins Russia does not appear to care, particularly:

Maybe worth a rant on a Russian channel?
Mutten, why do you use the confederate flag as your image. Are still watching the DUKES of Hazardous on television? Its insulting as an american too see that flag on a hungarian post.
