People smuggler fleeing from Hungarian police causes brutal accident

A people smuggler caused an accident, injuring 11 people in Andau, in eastern Austria, as he attempted to flee Hungarian police late on Monday.

The Pakistan-born driver fled from Hungarian police to Austria, where he crashed into a farm building and got jammed in the vehicle, according to Austrian police. The vehicle was transporting illegal migrants from Türkiye and Afghanistan, 11 of whom were injured, including two children.

The driver, who was seriously injured, was freed from the car by firefighters, air-lifted to hospital and detained. Helmut Marban, spokesman of the Burgenland Province police department, said so far this year the authorities have arrested some 2,500 migrants and 4 people smugglers.
