Orbán’s main challenger, Péter Magyar, vows to secure EUR 21 billion of frozen EU funds if elected

Tisza party leader Péter Magyar on Friday vowed to secure 8,000 billion forints-worth of EU funds “that Hungarians are entitled to”, adding that the funding came to “800,000 forints per person”.

Hungary’s EU funds lost because “of his “industrial-scale corruption”

Viktor Orbán “has taken a truth drug”, Magyar said, even as “he continues to rob and betray his country and compatriots”. Magyar said in a statement that “the most corrupt and richest prime minister in Hungarian history” had “told the truth about himself” in today’s radio interview, when he declared that “anyone capable of doing anything for power and money should never be trusted”.

He insisted that Orbán’s statement applied to himself and it was “no coincidence that the Hungarian people no longer trust him.” The Tisza leader added that Orbán would not manage to get hold of Hungary’s EU funds because of his “industrial-scale corruption”. “They steal everything that can be moved,” Magyar said.

Good old communist method

He accused Orbán of “using the good old communist method” of tarring others with the brush of his own sins. He said the Fidesz government blamed the Tisza Party for the EU withholding funds from Hungary. Yet Brussels froze the funds three years ago, before the Tisza was formed, he said, adding that this was do to “Orbán’s corruption”.

A Tisza government would join the EU prosecutor’s office immediately and probe the accumulation of wealth by politicians and their families, he declared. Magyar vowed to secure 8,000 billion forints-worth of EU funds, or 800,000 forints per person, and restart the Hungarian economy, supporting Hungarian companies and farmers, saving the health-care system, restoring education, dealing with the cost-of-living crisis, and tackling “Orbán’s inflation”. He insisted that Tisza was now the country’s strongest political party and he vowed to “take back our country”.

‘Magyar betrayed his family, now he has betrayed his country’, says Fidesz communication director

Opposition Tisza Party leader Péter Magyar betrayed his family and friends and now he is betraying his country, the communications director of ruling Fidesz-Christian Democrats said on Friday. Tamas Menczer called Magyar “a traitor”. “That’s what he is. Always the same. He intentionally harmed his family, betraying them to advance his own political career. Then his friends. And now it is time for his country. A traitor will always be a traitor,” he said on Facebook.

He added that while the Fidesz-Christian Democrats were fighting for the Hungarian people, the Tisza Party was joining forces with Brussels against Hungarians.

  1. Rather reasonable promise – follow the same rules as all other EU members. Should be self-evident, that if you join EU, you should follow the rules set by the democratic majority and use appropriate methods to influence decision making in EU and launch disputes using official channels when needed – not attack against the whole EU and do whatever you want, AND still expect contributing nations to support your anti-EU system with massive financial support.

I really hope our country will restart co-operation with EU and implement modern western values rather than stick to age old conservative religious corrupt system values. Maybe then our younger generation would not be so eager to find careers abroad but would stay and keep developing our country.

  2. Not only does Hungary get the 21 billion euros but it gets rid of corruption with a Tisza government. Why on earth would Hungarians prefer Fidesz given that choice? You have to be out of your mind to vote for them. If Hungarians actually vote for Fidesz in 2026 they are truly a nation of idiots who deserve the government they get.

  3. Here is another Hungarian who is willing to sell the country’s sovereignty. This would be traitor has some support. The supporters are the kind of people that supported the communist regime of Rakosi.
