Photo exhibition on 1956 opens at EP

Brussels (MTI) – A photo exhibition marking the 60th anniversary of Hungary’s 1956 anti-Soviet uprising opened in the European Parliament building on Tuesday.

The exhibition has been organised by the European People’s Party and is being held in the EP building’s Yehudi Menuhin Space in Brussels.

Hungarian MEP József Szájer opened the event on behalf of House Speaker László Kövér who was unable to attend due to illness.

The 1956 revolution “provides faith, strength and an example to all freedom-loving communities in the world, including the community of the European Union”, he said.

In order to combat the challenges the EU faces today, it should not weaken but strengthen “the national identities that give strength” to the community, he added.

  1. the harrowing story of a Hungarian girl…..it was not that harrowing a story, just a simple tragedy, one of many that occurred. I enjoyed the story just the same. having lived thru this period as a child myself, my 2nd memory of my childhood is watching my grandfather trying to sneak out to our ‘ista’lo’ to water the animals after days of hiding in a pit under our bed. he was almost at the barn door when his head exploded like a fallen egg but his body kept lurching forward a few more steps before crumbling. THAT is a harrowing experience. ilona macsuga, Szirmabesenyo”, Magyar Orsza’g

  2. Always sad when a mechanical translator is used to turn Magyar into English. She studied ‘cookery’? The term ‘word fencing’ I assume is DEBATING…not ON the side of her friend but AT the side of her friend unless they are on the ground, on their sides, one lying on top of the other. (nem egyma’s tettejin, egyma’s mellet) He ‘rifled’… this means to ‘root around’ in something like a drawer (turka’lt) . The death certificate was ‘engrossed’ ….that word means ‘nagy figyelemel’. Not sure what the hospital did…maybe ‘authenticate’ ? And, He talked enthusiastically about the girls who…it should be WHOM.

Can’t trust spellcheck or any other part of technology 100%. Good article just the same. Thanks for making the effort to pass along such stories. ilona (macsuga) hannah
