PM advisor says no reason to bring back conscription
Budapest, January 11 (MTI) – The Hungarian government sees no reason to reinstate compulsory military service but does believe it is crucial to make sure that there are enough reservists, the prime minister’s chief domestic security advisor said late on Sunday.
Gyorgy Bakondi reacted to comments from Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom in which she said that the reintroduction of military and civilian conscription “could make a difference” in crises like the migrant crisis.
Bakondi told public new channel M1 that on Tuesday the five parliamentary parties will begin discussions about an amendment to the constitution to allow the mobilisation and, if need be, the deployment of the armed forces in case of a terrorist threat.
On the subject of mass attacks on women in Cologne on New Year’s Eve, Bakondi said Hungarian secret services, like all of the world’s intelligence agencies, have the necessary tools to uncover any plots to carry out similar attacks. He said Hungary’s secret services are working closely together with foreign partner agencies, adding, at the same time, that the protection of external borders remains important as the unchecked influx of migrants poses a threat to public safety and national security.
Bakondi said the Hungarian government continues to do all it can in its talks with the other three members of the Visegrad Four grouping to emphasise the importance of border protection.
