Prime Minister Viktor Orbán met Viola Amherd, the President of the Swiss Confederation, to discuss Hungary’s upcoming EU presidency, the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, and bilateral economic cooperation, the PM’s press chief said on Friday.
Switzerland is looking forward to Hungary’s presidency, and is ready to cooperate closely during the country’s term in the second half of next year, Bertalan Havasi cited Amherd as saying.
After discussing economic cooperation, Orbán and Amherd discussed escalating conflicts in the world, Havasi said.
They agreed that they tensions between Israel and Palestine should be eased, and the conflict de-escalated.
Amherd briefed Orbán on plans to hold a peace conference on Ukraine in Switzerland in June.
Orbán said Hungary supported all peace initiatives, but said that peace negotiations should be preceded by an immediate ceasefire.
President Tamás Sulyok met Amherd later in the day, and told a joint press conference that hers was the first official visit of a Swiss head of state to Hungary in 13 years.
National sovereignty is a key issue for Hungary as well as Switzerland, he said.
Sulyok said he and Amherd agreed on the priority of four topics: in creating sustainable peace, the protection of civilians, increasing the effectiveness of the UN Security Council, and increasing climate security.
