PM Orbán’s aircraft ‘hijacked’ in Italy – police investigating

PM Viktor Orbán opened the spring session of the parliament on 27 February. The next day, he was on board of a military plane to travel to Egypt. On his way back home, however, his plane was ‘hijacked’ and landed at Pisa airport, in Tuscany, Italy. A Hungarian non-attached MP wants to know why and he said the police were investigating the issue.
Orbán travelled to Egypt on 28 February to meet with Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the President of the North African country. He flew on board an Airbus having the call sign nr 604, while another one, the nr 605, carried Hungarian businessmen. The latter returned home the same day, but Orbán’s plane went to Italy.
The aircraft spent one hour at the airport of Pisa, then returned to Budapest. But Orbán was not on board. A reader of 24.hu took photos of the Hungarian prime minister and his wife walking around downtown Florence on Piazza Carlo Goldonin.
Ákos Hadházy, a non-attached member of the Hungarian parliament, wants to know who ‘hijacked’ Orbán’s plane. He reported the issue to the police two weeks ago, suggesting that Orbán broke the law by using a Hungarian military aircraft for private purpose. Hadházy believes that the trip is an abuse of office, causing extra costs, mfor.hu wrote.
Hadházy shared a post saying that the Budapest police department (BRFK) transferred the investigation to the Budapest regional police department. The MP believes that means the BRFK could not reject it. Furthermore, they wrote to him that the matter concerns Viktor Orbán, who has immunity. Hadházy said he filed his report against an unknown perpetrator, so it is interesting the police know who ‘hijacked’ the military plane and ‘suspects’ Orbán.
Hadházy received an answer from the ministries of foreign affairs and interior stating that the operation of the military aircraft meets the regulations of the law and the relevant professional standards.
Hungarian media says that Orbán and his wife visited their daughter. She is studying in Florence.
