Unexpected closure: Popular Budapest lookout tower shut – photos

Visitors hoping to enjoy panoramic views over Budapest will have to postpone their trip to the Elisabeth Lookout (Erzsébet-kilátó), as the historic lookout tower has been temporarily closed due to structural damage caused by severe winter weather.
According to the local council of District XII, the combination of freezing temperatures, frost and extreme weather conditions has left the building in a hazardous state. Plaster has detached from several sections of the façade, creating a potential accident risk for visitors.

Safety first amid falling plaster
Officials said the closure was necessary to protect the public after inspections revealed that parts of the exterior surface had loosened. While the tower itself is off limits, the surrounding area and nearby walking trails remain open, so hikers and tourists can still access the popular hilltop zone.
The municipality stressed that the decision was precautionary and aimed solely at ensuring visitor safety.
Specialists already assessing the damage
Repair work is being prepared with the involvement of industrial rope-access specialists, often referred to as industrial alpinists. These experts have already begun surveying the structure to assess the extent of the deterioration and to determine the most effective repair methods.
