Port of Antwerp-Bruges strengthens international relations with Hungary
June 2023, Port of Antwerp-Bruges, one of the world’s largest ports and a key driver of global trade, is visiting Hungary, fostering new alliances and fortifying existing partnerships. The delegation is led by Wim Dillen, International Development Manager and is aimed at exploring mutually beneficial opportunities for trade, investment and knowledge exchange.
Port of Antwerp-Bruges has been actively engaged in Hungary for quite a few years. Walter Holzhammer has been the representative for Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Hungary since 2017. The strategic geographical location within Central Europe connecting East and West and the presence of strong industrial sectors including automotive, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, machinery, and electronics make Hungary an important partner for the 2nd largest port in Europe.
The significance of robust intermodal connections between our regions cannot be overstated. The transition from road to rail, known as the modal shift, holds immense importance in achieving our sustainability objectives. Even more important is the anticipated growth of the regional economy in Central Eastern Europe, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges aims to become an essential and indispensable partner, fully prepared to accommodate the increasing flow of goods and commodities.
Another common interest that Port of Antwerp-Bruges shares with Hungary is the commitment to sustainability and digital innovation.
The roadshow kicked off with a vibrant network event held in the heart of Budapest attended by esteemed representatives from both Belgian and Hungarian businesses; the event fostered meaningful connections and facilitated valuable discussions on trade opportunities and mutual cooperation. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges delegation seized this occasion to showcase its world-class facilities and services and gave an update on their ambitious plans for energy transition and contributions to a climate neutral economy. A business luncheon hosted by H.E. Mr Siegfried Peinen Ambassador to Belgium in Hungary and several visits to key industrial sites in Hungary gave cause to fruitful discussions on efficient intermodal connectivity, optimization of the supply chain and investment opportunities.
Commenting on the Hungary roadshow, Mr. Wim Dillen, International Development Manager of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Our visit to Hungary has been very productive, and we are immensely grateful for the warm welcome and constructive discussions. We are excited about the potential synergies and opportunities that lie ahead, particularly in strengthening logistics connections and promoting sustainable practices.”
Walter Holzhammer, Representative Austria and Hungary for Port of Antwerp-Bruges states: I have been the Port representative in Austria and Hungary since 2017. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges’ presence in Hungary clearly shows the strategic relevance of the region as gateway to Central and Eastern Europe. By extending our reach into this vital hinterland, we unlock tremendous opportunities for trade, collaboration, and economic growth.”
