QS University Ranking reveals top Hungarian universities: one is in the top 200!
Quacquarelli Symonds shared its latest university ranking recently. One of the Hungarian universities is in Europe’s top 200 higher education institutions. Furthermore, multiple Hungarian universities could advance on the list compared with 2024.
According to eduline.hu, Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) occupied the 190th position on the QS University Ranking, being Hungary’s top university. In the world ranking (QS WUR), ELTE was in the 564th place, improving its position by about 140 compared to 2024.
ELTE improved, BME slid back
QS made public the 2025 European university ranking on Tuesday. The ranking editors evaluate universities based on several criteria, including academic reputation, indicators measuring the employability of graduates, international cooperation, teacher-student rate, and sustainability. The ranking included 684 institutions from more than 40 European countries.
ELTE improved 18 positions compared to their 2024 results when the European university ranking of the QS was first assembled. ELTE is followed by the University of Debrecen (+36 positions) and the University of Szeged (+ 14 positions).
Interestingly, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics slid back and found itself in the 238th position for 2025. Meanwhile, Corvinus University Budapest, the István Széchenyi University in Győr, the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the University of Óbuda and Miskolc could climb higher on the list.

- University of Szeged – 228.
- Budapest University of Technology and Economics – 247.
- University of Pécs – 314.
- Corvinus University Budapest – 370.
- István Széchenyi University, GyÅ‘r – 370.
- Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, GödöllÅ‘ – 433.
- University of Óbuda – 485.
- University of Mickolc – 496.
- Pannon University, Veszprém – 498.
- Péter Pázmány Catholic University, Budapest – 556-600.
- University of Sopron – 551-600.
- Károly Eszterházy Catholic University, Eger – 601+
- Gáspár Károli Calvinist University, Budapest – 601+
On the top of QS’s European ranking is the ETH Zurich and not the University of Oxford as of 2024. Even the Imperial College London took over the prestigious English top university.
In the Eastern European region, the Charles University of Prague is the best, occupying the 79th position.
