Rainbow flags continue to show up in protest against the Hungarian “homophobic law”

The “homophobic law” passed in Hungary has provoked international outrage. And the ongoing EURO 2020 is no exception, as the rainbow flag and the debate over it have been accompanying the league matches throughout. We have compiled recent events.

As we reported earlier, a petition to light up the Allianz Arena of Munich in rainbow colours was declined by UEFA. As The Guardian’s photos show, football stadiums throughout Germany lit up instead.

Then, at the match, a fan ran into the field, waving a rainbow-coloured flag, during the Hungarian anthem, according to euronews.

According to 24.hu, Péter Szijjártó reacted to the event in an interview shared on Facebook:

“That it is possible to run into the field with a rainbow flag in front of the Hungarian team during the Hungarian anthem is, I think, an unacceptable and repulsive provocation.”

On Wednesday, Hungarian football fans attacked two German women for going to the Puskás Arena in a rainbow-coloured hat for the Portuguese-French European Championship match and having painted a rainbow flag on their hands, writes Bild.de, according to Telex. The two women are German medical students studying in Budapest, living in Hungary for years. They told the paper that they have never experienced such violence before.

According to HVG, Sándor Csányi, President of the Hungarian Football Association, asked the fans to refrain from whistling out the anthems, along with all exclusionary expressions. In order for Hungary to continue to host prestigious sporting events in the future, a sportsmanlike atmosphere is also essential.

“As a host, we need to gain widespread international recognition in this area as well,”

the president said.

UEFA has a responsibility to protect the players from harassment, Georginio Wijnaldum, captain of the Dutch national team, told Sky Sports on Friday. “UEFA must protect the players. It shouldn’t be the responsibility of the players [to decide whether they should walk off]”, said Wijnaldum, adding that he is not ruling out walking off the field if something like that happens on Sunday.

It was previously announced on the team’s official twitter page that the captain of the Dutch national team will play in the armband with the inscription “One Love” on Sunday evening in Budapest.

Regarding sponsors’ ads, UEFA is proving more permissive, approving a number of supportive rainbow ads appearing during pride month, says HVG, so rainbow ads are expected at the last match held in Hungary as well.

Buildings are being lit up in rainbow colours once again

On Friday night, MEPs of the Democratic Coalition projected “Hungary is not Orbán” on the wall of Fidesz’s office in Brussels, writes 24.hu.

According to Index, the Hungarian embassy in the Hague was lit up in rainbow colours on Friday. According to Péter Szijjártó, the action of Amnesty International was an unprecedented incident because, although they asked the Dutch authorities to prevent it, they refused to do so.

The match with many promises

Fans arriving at the Puskás Arena and the fan zone in Budapest are instructed by the organisers to hand over their rainbow-coloured flags at the entry, writes the Dutch AD, according to HVG. The Dutch supporters wanted to protest against the recently adopted anti-gay law in Hungary.

HVG claims that AD’s information was also confirmed by the Dutch Football Association, who wrote that, according to UEFA, only flags in the colours of the participating countries could be brought into the stadium and the fan zone.

According to infostart.hu, however, UEFA officially denied in a Twitter post that it had anything to do with the rainbow flags banned from the Puskás Arena, so, although several rainbow flags have been confiscated from Dutch fans, it is not known who took them.

  1. If, as he and the shameful regime he shamefully represents keep saying, the law is about paedophilia and not homosexuality ( although we all know it is in fact a law against homosexuals ) what problem does petrusinu siartu, mandarine of Orbanistan, has with the rainbow flag?

  2. Mario, We know you support immoral behaviou and indecency, we get it, move along, most Hungarians do not agree with you and your American moral degenerate friends. Shouldn’t you be in San Francisco waving your rainbow flag? Doesn’t your country America not already have enough problems without sticking its nose in Hungarian internal policy and law?

  3. Wow, notmario, you really seem to be a sad creature with all that hate. Move back to us in Hungary and see if you are happy. Hope you got rich in America.

  4. Globally the law passed by the Hungarian Government June 15th adds to the carnage this present Government is effecting on Hungary.
Not Mario will continue to read outpouring of opposition to the passing of this law.
Opposition will not be by force of numbers that carry or are of the “rainbow humanitarian community” of 21st civilian life, but Hungary, as we are seeing mounting opposition will build that will EMBARRASS us as a country, hurt damage and scare us – in the global opinion of Hungary.
Dictatorship in style continues being openly displayed and practiced by the present Government of Hungary and they are not FINISHED – in the intentions and introductions of Policies, that will be introduced into Law in Hungary, built on a Dictatorship Philosophy and Idea of Government.
National Elections May 2022 – vote citizens – the Power of the People through their Vote – there Voice and opportunity under Democracy – by weight of numbers – to make change.
Post 1989 without doubt the most vital elections to the citizens of Hungary 9.6 million – to VOTE and decide – what is there Picture and Vision – for the immediate and FUTURE of Hungary.

  5. Hungary has become a pariah on the world stage, a sad joke, a country to be protested at every turn (akin to apartheid South Africa, the Soviet Union, and others that stood against the moral values of the rest of the world). I’m not sure how anyone thinks that this is a good thing…even supporters of the Orbán regime and it’s hateful law.

  6. Seen at a supermarket in Budapest : ‘rainbow coloured’ toilet paper.

Almost all the packets had been sold.

UNUSED ROLLS will definitely become a ‘collector’ item !

  7. Again, my question is: if the law is not against homosexuality, if homosexuality is not an issue to Orbán&co. then why is the rainbow flag an issue to Orbán&co.?
And why are they so obsessed with people’s sexuality to the point that they want to regulate the private life of the youth? I know several homosexuals and none of them became so, adding to that that what they read or watched when they were teenagers had nothing to do whatsoever with their sexual preferences.
Truth is, this is a shameful law which puts in one basket paedophily and homosexuality, viciously suggesting that the two are somehow linked. Just like in the Third Reich and in Fascist Italy. Shame. And twice a shame the EU has not given Orbán the aut aut yet: you erase that law or you are out. Period. Message should be clear and strong: we, Europeans, do not want to step a century back.

  8. NoH8,
I can understand that it suits you and a whole lot of people to confuse the issue.
You demand that your wishes are respected.
Don’t you think Hungary deserves the same consideration?
    DON’T BE A HYPOCRITE.
HUNGARY IS WHAT ORBAN AND FIDESZ MADE IT AND AT LAST IT IS A DECENT, A GOOD AND A SAFE PLACE TO LIVE IN.
A LOT MORE THAN WHAT YOU CAN SAY FOR THE REST OF EUROPE.
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY MEMORY
    ERGO, HUNGARY IS ORBAN.
THE LAW IS TO PROTECT CHILDREN.
YOU MUST HAVE BEEN A CHILD ONCE.
    HANDS OFF HUNGARY…………

  9. If the German Greens genuinely believe the law is about homosexuality and not about paedophilia, then why are they against it . The German greens have time and time again been revealed to be protecting paedophiles and to have had known paedophiles among its founding members . Yet they welcome into German an Islamifcation that has no tolerance of homosexuality, but which celebrates a prophet who was a paedophile

  10. “Mario” now claims to be a ‘European’ when – in reality – all readers of “DAILY NEWS HUNGARY” know very well that he is an American in the paid service of George Soros.

After all, he has NEVER denied it – yet alone publicly stated from what European country he originates & where he now resides – and in EVERY respect acts as a ‘lap dog’.

Admittedly it cannot be easy to live in an outside kennel and survive on a diet of canned offal but – after all – he chose that lifestyle !

As for the European Commission / Union / Parliament ORDERING Hungary to ‘scrap’ laws which those homophobic / illegal-migrant-worshipping institutions find ‘offensive’, then all that SANE Europeans can do is paraphrase the President of the Czech Republic by saying “ALL SEXUAL DEVIANTS ARE TRULY DISGUSTING”.

The question MUST be asked is why the so-called European ‘institutions’ are terrified of asking the actual European citizens about THEIR views on these matters instead of ensuring decisions in relation to same are made by ‘the usual suspects’ ( sexual deviants and their left-wing supporters in the ‘corridors of power’).

The old saying is true : “It’s a dog’s life but those bitches (and others) in power will make it the best life possible.”

Time for “Mario” to be taken for his ‘walkies’ ……..
