Rate of Hungarian population decline increases in first 6 months
The rate of population decline increased in the first six months of 2019 after 2.8 percent fewer births and 1.0 percent more deaths were registered compared with the same period last year, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said on Tuesday.
In the first six months of the year, 41,902 children were born, 1,201 fewer than in the same period last year, while 67,741 died, 691 more than in Jan-Mar 2018.
The rate of natural population decline was 7,9 percent higher than in the same period a year earlier, the KSH said.
The number of marriages increased, with 24,020 couples tying the knot, 7,9 percent more than in the same period last year.
As we wrote a week ago, Budapest’s population has been continuously decreasing since 2016. In 2016-2017, 3,000-3,000 more, while last year, nearly 6,000 more people left the capital than moved in. The majority of migrants start a new life in the central agglomeration – one and a half decades ago, 738,000 people moved to the capital’s “skirt” area, including 80 settlements, which number increased to 850,000 people last year.
