Registered same-sex partners entitled to same tax benefits as married couples, says ombudsman
Budapest (MTI) – All tax benefits such as ones for newlyweds or exemption from the inheritance tax are to be applied for registered same-sex partners, too, gay rights group Háttér Társaság said in a statement on Wednesday.
Háttér quoted a recent report by the ombudsman for fundamental rights, concluding an investigation into complaints by people whose partners had died and from whom the tax authority had insisted collecting the inheritance tax.
Under effective regulations, married or registered partners are exempt from the inheritance tax if the spouse dies. The ombudsman therefore warned the economy minister and the head of the tax authority to apply those regulations indiscriminately to married and registered partners, and requested that the tax collected in such cases should be repaid to the complainants.
