Regular production of razor wire starts in prison north of Budapest

Budapest, December 9 (MTI) – The regular production of NATO-standard razor wire has started in the prison of Marianosztra north of Budapest, Gyorgy Bakondi, the prime minister’s domestic security advisor, said on Wednesday.

Hungary used barbed razor wire to build a barrier along its border sections with Serbia and Croatia during the summer and the autumn to quell an unprecedented wave of migrants crossing illegally to Hungary.

The fence structure was built by installing 72,000 pillars holding 247 kms of barbed wire fitted with an extra 1,100 kms of NATO standard razor wire, Bakondi told a press conference.

The stocks being produced at Marianosztra will stand ready to be shortly installed if a fence needs to be erected along Hungary’s border with Romania, he said.

Hungary has already supplied 24,000 rolls of NATO wire and 16,000 pillars to Slovenia and another 10,000 rolls to Macedonia allowing the construction of a 100 km NATO-standard fence, he said.

Macedonia also received machines for putting down the pillars and other technical equipment from Hungary, he said.
