Busy Budapest tram line upgrade enters new phase: Road closures and traffic changes ahead

On 10 July, the renovation of the tram tracks on Budapest’s Grand Boulevard entered a new phase between Tátra Street and Jászai Mari Square. Work has now shifted to the side heading toward Pest, bringing traffic changes that will directly impact commuters, especially those travelling by car, bus, or replacement buses on this stretch.

What should commuters expect?

Due to the second phase of the renovation, as of 10 July, all road traffic, including buses, has been diverted to the side leading to Buda, on the north (13th District) side. Traffic continues to flow in both directions with one lane each, and the diversion points remain unchanged: direction switches occur at Margit Bridge and Pannónia Street, according to a joint statement by BKK and BKV (Budapest’s public transport companies).

The reroute also affects replacement bus routes, but the stops themselves remain the same. For example, passengers can still board and disembark at the usual spots near Vígszínház.

New traffic lane near the Pest side of Margit Bridge

Drivers should note a key change near the Pest bridgehead of Margit Bridge: coming from Buda, there are now two lanes instead of one. One lane is designated for those heading toward Nyugati Square, while the other serves traffic turning onto Balassi Bálint Street. This development is expected to ease congestion and increase the junction’s capacity, particularly during morning and evening rush hours.
