Edinburgh Castle, located in Scotland’s capital city, ranks first, dominating the city’s skyline from the top of Castle Rock. It is one of the most historic and iconic castles in Scotland, dating back over a thousand years. With a staggering 698,000 Instagram posts and an impressive 30,752 5-star reviews on TripAdvisor, Edinburgh Castle is a must-see destination for history buffs and Instagram aficionados alike.
The second spot is secured by Prague Castle, the largest coherent castle complex in the world, which offers panoramic views of the city’s picturesque old town. Spain’s Alhambra ranks third, and Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, imagined to be the inspiration for Disney’s Cinderella Castle, takes fourth. Completing the top five is Austria’s Schönbrunn Palace, a Baroque masterpiece renowned for its opulent interiors and sprawling gardens.
9th: Buda Castle
Buda Castle is the historic castle and palace complex of the Hungarian kings in Budapest. First built in 1265, the huge Baroque palace was given its present form between 1749 and 1769. The original royal palace was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in the Kádár era in a simplified Stalinist Baroque style. The castle is a World Heritage Site in Budapest and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Today the castle houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum.
Countries with the most popular castles
France boasts an impressive presence featuring five entries in the top 30, with the Palace of Versailles as the nation’s most popular (seventh). Not far behind, England showcases four captivating castles, headed by Windsor Castle in sixth. Germany, which is known for its diverse architectural heritage, features additional two castles alongside Neuschwanstein: Heidelberg Castle in the thirteenth and Eltz Castle in the sixteenth.
Dr Jan Kuklinski, General Manager at weloveholidays commented on the research: “Europe has an incredible variety of architectural styles, which is reflected in the many castles found across the continent, so it’s not surprising these stunning buildings are popular on social media. I hope our ranking sparks your interest in exploring the enchanted castles of Europe.”
