Revolut’s significant expansion in Hungary: Local branch opening very soon?

Revolut has quietly taken an important step to strengthen its presence in Hungary: the neobank is searching for over 40 new professionals in legal, customer support, finance, and lending roles. According to reports from Portfolio and InfoStart, this recruitment drive could even signal preparations for the company’s domestic branch opening.

More than 40 new positions

The company’s job advertisements indicate they are looking for applicants both in Budapest and for remote work across the country. Open positions include legal advisor, financial/controlling manager, customer support specialist, and notably, a lending expert. This suggests that Revolut may be planning to enter the lending market in the longer term, similar to other European countries where they have introduced personal loans and credit cards.

According to Portfolio, market sources say that Revolut has already chosen the leader for its Hungarian operation: a professional with extensive experience in finance. However, their name has not yet been made public. Establishing local management could be crucial for future plans.

Branch opening: not this year, but possible next year

The London-based parent company announced at the end of September that it will open new branches in Portugal and Belgium in 2025. Although Hungary was not on that list, this expansion strongly appears to be laying the groundwork for banking operations here. Market sources suggest the domestic branch might open in 2026.

Such a move would be a major step forward, as Hungarian customers would receive personalised services complying with local regulations. Moreover, it would allow the introduction of Hungarian-language customer service—a feature the Hungarian National Bank has urged multiple times.

Small team, big significance

At first glance, adding 40 employees might not seem large compared to OTP’s over 11,500 staff or MBH Bank’s nearly 9,500 employees. However, Revolut serves more than 2 million Hungarian customers, virtually all on a cross-border basis until now. Therefore, these steps could be strategically important, potentially establishing Revolut as a leading player in the Hungarian financial market over time.

Lending market expansion on the horizon?

One of the most notable developments is the creation of the lending expert role. Revolut has already launched credit portfolios in several European countries, and has previously indicated that introducing loan products in Hungary is a goal. In the short term, they are focusing more on investment services, but in the longer term, they plan to enter the mortgage lending market as well.
