Exchange on Both Sides
Moscow stated that in return 24 bodies of Russian soldiers were handed over. These exchanges form part of ongoing humanitarian arrangements between the two sides, despite the fierce military hostilities. The identification process aims not only to document losses but also to provide families with long-awaited clarity about the fate of their loved ones.
Zelensky’s Visit to Donetsk
Coinciding with the handover, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited troops in the heavily contested Donetsk region. His visit highlighted the continued challenges faced by Ukraine’s forces as they fight to withstand Russian pressure. Zelenskyy stressed that defending the region remains a strategic priority and that Ukrainian soldiers can count on full state support.
Humanitarian Dimension of the War
The exchange of bodies underscores the humanitarian toll of the conflict. For thousands of Ukrainian families, it brings painful certainty that simultaneously highlights the scale of the losses. In Russia too, the return of fallen soldiers fuels public debate and underscores the mounting costs of war.
Humanitarian organizations note that such exchanges, even amid ongoing hostilities, reflect adherence to basic international norms. While they do not change the course of the fighting, they provide a rare example of cooperation and acknowledgment of shared humanitarian responsibilities.
