Unexpectedly, Ryanair closes one of its oldest routes from Budapest!

Local authorities increased rural airport fees, so Ryanair cancelled its flight from Budapest to the Danish city popular for its Legoland.

Ryanair closes route due to high costs

According to okosutas.hu, Ryanair closed its flight from Budapest to Billund, a destination popular among travellers for hosting the head office of the LEGO Group and having the famous Legoland. The flight was announced for this summer, but a new resolution concerning airport fees made Ryanair close it immediately. Billund was one of the oldest routes of Ryanair from the Hungarian capital. The last flight from Budapest Airport to the Danish town is expected to depart in March.

Hungarian low-cost Wizz Air regularly rewrites its schedules, but such revisions are unusual for Ryanair. Okosutas wrote that they make such decisions only if some sudden additional cost is imposed on them, which is exactly what happened in Billund. Ryanair decided not to fly from Budapest to the Danish town because rural airport fees increased significantly, which made them decide to withdraw.

The Irish budget airline said it would close its Billund base due to the cost rise. However, at first, a few routes from Billund remained, serviced by external bases. A few days later, those were also cancelled.

Danish Legoland is no longer reachable from Hungary

Billund is home to the LEGO Group and the first Legoland theme park. In Okosutas’s experience, the town is a great place to visit, especially with kids. Unfortunately, the flight will end before the summer break, so those planning to visit Legoland can only hope that the math will work out for Ryanair again so, sooner or later, they reintroduce the route. If not, Legoland in England is not bad, though it cannot compete with the one in Billund, the Hungarian air travel media outlet wrote.

LEGO Group has been influencing Billund’s economy since the 1930s. The LEGO factory was established by Ole Kirk Christiansen, and the town experienced rapid growth in the 1960s with the opening of Billund Airport and the Legoland theme park in 1968. Billund also hosts the headquarters of Sun Air of Scandinavia.
