Safety in Hungary exceptional in Europe, says foreign minister
Safety in Hungary, including in Budapest, is exceptional in the whole of Europe, as demonstrated by recent events, such as a soccer match in the Netherlands last week, the foreign minister said on Friday.
The ministry cited Péter Szijjártó telling a podium discussion that foreign visitors in Budapest greatly appreciated the safety of Budapest.
“European events of the recent period, such as a soccer match in the Netherlands or the soccer match they did not dare hold in Belgium all demonstrate that from this aspect Budapest, and the whole of Hungary, is truly exceptional in Europe,” he said.
He added that the only area where had had experienced negative changes in the recent period was public hygiene. Additionally, he said that in other cities cycle lanes had been allocated without narrowing down the space for car traffic.
Among the Budapest highlights he mentioned were the Puskás Aréna, the children’s railway, and the Elisabeth lookout tower.

And the reason for the exceptional safety?
The government has not allowed the country to be invaded by “New Europeans.”
Simple as that.
It’s not as simple as that, Hungary and Budapest in particular have been considered safe places long before migration became an issue in Europe. Hungarians generally shy away from engaging in the sort of crimes that have become effectively legalised in other parts of the western world due to a lack of police numbers and inadequate funding. I felt safer in Budapest compared to London even 30 years ago, although in recent years social inequality has risen in Hungary with a greater visible presence of the homeless and the mentally disturbed, due in no small part to the lack of funding of agencies that serve to address these issues. Hungarians have long feared falling foul of their police and justice system, perhaps due to its historic status as a police state and this instills discipline, even amongst those that have little to nothing and would otherwise be attracted to acquisitive crimes. I have however experienced some unpleasant and potentially threatening experiences in Budapest that I never experienced a few years back so it isn’t a bed of roses.
It would be nice if it was true, but its not. Simple as that.
