Budapest (MTI)- Sealing Hungary’s southern borders has been a successful move and the government has fulfilled its aim to protect the Hungarian border, the Hungarian people and the European Union’s border, government spokesman Zoltán Kovács said on Sunday.
Illegal border crossing by migrants has practically stopped but the authorities are continually monitoring the situation and will react if any changes make this necessary, for instance this is why border controls were temporarily reinstated at the border with Slovenia, he added.
Months ago, Hungarians clearly expressed their opinion about action to be taken against illegal migration. Since then, measures implemented on the Hungarian-Serbian border and later on the Hungarian-Croatian border have shown that it is possible to take effective and successful measures against illegal entrants.
He told a press conference in Nagykanizsa, in south-western Hungary, earlier on Sunday that there had been practically no events to report since new border measures were implemented on Hungary’s borders with Croatia and Slovenia.
Kovács said that the “green border” between Hungary and Croatia was sealed from midnight on Friday and border control was temporarily reinstated on the Hungary-Slovenia border on Saturday morning. The latter move was in line with Schengen criteria and it was triggered by the arrival of around 150 migrants to the Slovenian side of the Hungarian border at Rédics, he added.
