Promises on track, reality derailed: Serbia-Hungary railway collapses in a day

Change language:
Just days after Serbian railway officials declared the Belgrade–Subotica line safe, a train derailed on the very same route on Thursday, raising serious questions about the credibility of the safety assurances.
Derailment shortly after departure
On Thursday, a passenger train travelling from Subotica, Serbia to Szeged derailed. The accident happened shortly after departure, when the train unexpectedly left the tracks. Although the train did not overturn and no one was injured, the incident still caused considerable alarm among passengers.
Following the incident, passengers were temporarily kept on board before later being informed that no replacement bus would be provided. Instead, they were promised a refund for their tickets. This response left many questioning both the organisation and overall passenger safety.
Just a day earlier, everything was “excellent”
The incident drew particular attention because it came almost immediately after an official statement emphasising the railway line’s safety and efficiency. In that communication, the Serbian railway company claimed that developments between Belgrade and Subotica had created a modern, fast, and reliable transport system.
According to the statement, trains can reach speeds of up to 200 km/h both in Serbia and in Hungary, and the system meets all contemporary standards.
Political questions and doubts
The accident also triggered political reactions. An opposition politician publicly challenged the regional leadership, questioning whether it is still credible to claim that citizens can travel in a “safe and modern” railway system, as reported by Telex.
Criticism has focused on the fact that several stations still lack proper operating permits, and some elements were allegedly not constructed according to the original plans. This raises serious concerns about the project’s transparency and quality.
Cross-border complications
The situation is further complicated by the fact that the railway line is part of an international project. According to the Serbian side, developments on their section have been completed, while issues remain on the Hungarian side. However, this mutual shifting of responsibility does not explain what caused the specific incident.
The events highlight that infrastructure development projects involve not only technical challenges but also political and communication-related issues.
Loss of trust or a one-off incident?
Although the derailment fortunately resulted in no injuries, it could still significantly affect public trust. Incidents like this make it difficult to maintain the image of a fully safe and reliable system.
The coming period will be crucial in determining whether authorities can investigate the incident transparently and provide clear answers to the questions that have emerged.
